Cash is king! Without it, businesses go bust and people go bankrupt. Yes, you may have properties and investments, but unless you cash them out, are they of any use to you? How much money can you summon during an emergency? Knowing your cash balance always helps. Trust me! I’ve been doing so for over a year.

Last year, in February 2015, I came across an article from Business Insider which talked about a 25-year old guy named John Steinert who had created an excellent excel sheet (alliteration intended) in his website to handle his personal finances. Intrigued, I visited his website and started using his template. Soon enough, maintaining this excel sheet became a part of my daily routine.

Since downloading John’s initial version of the excel sheet, I have improved it quite a bit to suit my needs. I will let you be the judge in deciding whose version is better.

Couple of things before I let you download my version of the personal finance tracker:

  1. Don’t get scared by seeing the level of details. Spend some time playing around and you’ll notice that the sheet does all the work for you since the formulas are in place. You should, however, change or add columns (for instance, rent) as per your needs.
  2. After you’ve forecasted your income in the budget, make sure you set aside funds for the future. Save first, then spend!

Pro tip: If you’re lazy like me, skip the budgeting part and record only your income and expenses (that too on a weekly basis but keep regular records on a note-keeping app like Google Keep).

So, without further ado, here’s the download link
